VIRIDIAN ENSEMBLE
BRISTOL (1/2)
In conversation with Viridian Ensemble
A podcast /chat about Bristol’s DIY music scene in two parts.
Part 1: Esme Betamax and Dali de Saint Paul
Viridian Ensemble would like to dedicate this podcast to their friend Tom McCartaigh, singer of The Perverts, who sadly passed away on the 6th October 2020.

Viridian Ensemble is Dali de Saint Paul (Vocal +FX), Tina Hitchens (flute), Caitlin Alais Callahan (double bass), Esme Betamax (percussion) and Laura Phillips (16mm films, sound responsive projections, waterphone).
An ethereal blend of image and noise, reimagining folklore and femininity. Improvised sound and image (digital and analogue) produce textural dialogue.
Inspired by Expanded Film, and the free improvisation vanguard: Les Diaboliques/Feminist Improv Group. Performances evoke dissociative states, keening, and supernaturalism. Utterances and nonsensical languages entwine collective rhythm, tone, and resonance.
After releasing Trotula, in 2020 Viridian Ensemble was commissioned by Aerial Festival and The Quietus to perform Wordsworth’s epic poem The Prelude and just released a live recording at Cafè OTO for OTO’s own imprint.
