LIEW NIYOMKARN: EITHER WAY IS
either way is:
I began crafting short texts about sounds, designed to accompany my live sets — these pieces are a fusion of sound and word. I have always wanted to explore sound in a way that doesn’t sound like sound theory, inviting connections from different angles and embracing a vast spectrum of practices.
In my research on the essence of sound, I stumbled upon a tapestry of technical terms that resonate with multiple interpretations: free field, image shift, LEDE (Live End Dead End), baffle, and decoupling. Each term, a gateway to myriad possibilities, echoes through the corridors of perception
Sound waves are inherently periodic, and phase cancellation occurs when there is a difference in timing and amplitude between two or more sources
Imagine two waves, each a distinct ripple in the fabric of sound, meeting in the vast expanse of space. If their peaks and troughs align perfectly, they amplify one another, creating a symphony of heightened resonance. But if their crests and troughs meet in discord, they clash and cancel out, leaving a void, a whisper where once there was a roar.
This delicate ballet of waves, moving in and out of sync, paints an invisible picture of harmony and conflict. Something can’t be possessed, maybe only borrowed—undefined property.

Liew Niyomkarn is a sound and musician based in Brussels. Coming from sound experimental practice and performance, her work focuses on listening practice and conveying memories through sound. She uses field recordings to detect time, (non)-human voices, everyday routines, text, archrival sounds, and different tuning systems in nature – to combine them with a sonic palette and the properties of sound itself such as sounds of spaces – she presents her work in the form of live performance and sound installation.
Liew holds an MFA Calarts and Sonology course in The Hague. Liew has performed in many various places such as High Zero Festival (Baltimore), Studio Loos (Den Haag), WORM (Rotterdam), STUK (Belgium), DAAD (Berlin), The Wulf (Los Angeles), Toneelhuis (Antwerp) and among other places. Liew has taught graphic score workshops and made a radio show with a long-term collaborator, Velma Spell.
